Eeyore's Requiem
- 1½ oz Campari
- 1 oz Dolin Blanc vermouth
- 1/2 oz London Dry gin (Tanqueray)
- 1/4 oz Cynar
- 1/4 oz Fernet-Branca
- 2 dashes orange bitters
Stir with ice and strain into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with an orange twist.
Eeyore's Requiem was created by Toby Maloney of The Violet Hour, Chicago, around 2009. He named it after Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh whom he calls 'the most bitter character in literature.' We came across the recipe in Imbibe Magazine though it can also be found in Toby's book, The Bartender's Manifesto.
The drink is also known as the Fernet Negroni. It takes the already bitter Negroni, amps up the Campari, and tops that with a touch of two other bitter Italian liqueurs. The result is very bitter but enjoyably so. It is also quite sweet but that is required to balance the bitterness. This is not a drink for the novice but if you enjoy the Negroni you might try advancing to Eeyore's Requiem.
